Our Local Las Vegas Optometrist Offers Farsighted Vision Treatment

Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, can occur in people of any age and is estimated to affect at least half of all people who require eyeglasses or contact lenses. Las Vegas optometrists Dr. Kopolow and Dr. Girisgen work with hundreds of people every year struggling with this condition and offer affordable and effective vision-correcting solutions.

What Does It Mean To Have Farsighted Vision?

If you have a farsighted vision, then you generally have an easier time seeing things that are far away and have a harder time seeing things that are close up. For instance, a person with farsightedness may be able to read a street sign relatively easily, however, struggle reading a text message on their phone.

In general, farsighted vision occurs because a person's eyeballs are too short or their corneas are too flat, which causes visual images to focus somewhere "behind" the retina. Genetics often play a role in this, however environmental factors can also contribute.

What Are The Symptoms of Farsightedness?

The symptoms of farsightedness vary significantly in terms of degree. Some telltale signs include:

  • Difficulty reading and/or having to move text away from your eyes to see clearly
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurry vision, especially when looking at objects close up
  • Headaches and eye strain during and after performing up-close tasks such as reading or texting

Strangely enough, people with farsightedness also tend to involuntarily utilize more energy than necessary to maintain clear vision while looking at distant objects (let alone the tremendous energy used to maintain clear vision while looking at nearby objects), which can further exacerbate eye fatigue, blurry vision, and headaches.

How Is Farsighted Vision Diagnosed?

Your optometrist in Las Vegas can diagnose farsighted vision on a comprehensive eye exam. To do this accurately, an eye doctor needs to look at several aspects of vision beyond just the standard Snellen eye chart (you the know one: with the big E at the top). In this case, the Snellen chart tests a person's ability to see far away, which is generally intact with someone who has farsighted vision. A complete farsighted test will include an assessment of your ability to see nearby objects and an examination of the internal and external eye anatomy.

How Can My Optometrist In Las Vegas Help Treat My Farsightedness?

As your optometrist in Las Vegas, Dr. Kopolow or Dr. Girisgen can provide you customized prescription eyewear to correct for your farsighted vision. Most people do very well with eyeglasses or contact lenses and may choose one type of eyewear over the other depending on their lifestyle.

It's important to remember that your eyes change as you age (especially true for young children and older adults). For this reason, you should regularly visit your eye doctor to ensure that your current prescription is up-to-date.
