Las Vegas Optometrists Offer: Management of Ocular Diseases
The management of ocular diseases includes regular visits and ongoing treatment. The goal of the management of ocular diseases is to correct, reduce and stop the progression of the ocular disease. Glaucoma is diagnosed after a comprehensive eye examination using slit lamp biomicroscopy. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is typically a chronic, gradually progressive disease. Medical management is often the first choice in most cases. With the advent of newer medications with improved efficacy, the initial treatment options have been expanded.
Macular degeneration is diagnosed using OCT imaging or a procedure called fluorescein angiography. These tests detail the pattern of the eyes’ blood vessels and retinal anatomy. A treatment management plan for wet acute macular degeneration often includes medications like Lucentis and Eylea. Treatment management plans for intermediate to advanced dry macular degeneration often include supplements like beta-carotene, vitamin C and zinc, as these supplements have been shown to decrease the risk of vision loss.
Cataracts are common age-related vision conditions. They never go away on their own and if left untreated and progress, it can cause blindness. Symptoms include cloudy vision, double vision and difficult reading due to black-white contrast. Cataract removal surgery removes the cataract and replaces the faulty lens with a permanent implant known as an intraocular lens. This procedure takes less and an hour and is generally painless. If you have cataracts in both eyes, most optometrists recommend waiting at least one month between the cataracts surgeries.
The most common type of eyelid cancer is basal cell carcinoma. If your eye doctor suspects basal cell carcinoma, they will take a wedge eyelid biopsy and send it to a pathologist for confirmation. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the Moh’s Technique is likely to be recommended. With this method, the doctor surgically removes the tumor and reconstructs the eyelid.
