Eye Allergy Treatment with Our Eye Doctor near Las Vegas

Eye allergies are often referred to as allergic conjunctivitis and the condition is common in children and adults. When the eyes encounter an irritant, it can cause an allergic reaction that includes itchy eyes, excessive watering, and redness. If you suspect you have eye allergies, you should schedule an eye exam with our eye doctor near Las Vegas for an accurate diagnosis of your irritated eyes, treatment, and monitoring.

Types of Eye Allergies

There are two types of eye allergies, and they are classified according to when and how long you experience symptoms.

  • Seasonal – Seasonal allergies only occur during specific seasons and/or when certain allergens are in the air
  • Perennial – Perennial allergies occur year-round and can be caused by any number of allergens

Eye Allergy Causes

Many of the same types of allergens that cause sinus allergies and hay fever also cause eye allergies. This includes pet dander, dust mites, smoke, car exhaust and pollen. Allergic reactions can also occur because of certain cosmetics and perfumes. If you use over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops, you may be allergic to one of the preservatives in the medication. Thankfully, our eye doctor can help determine if you have eye allergies and the eye allergens most likely to be causing your symptoms so that an effective treatment plan can be created to help reduce your symptoms.

Symptoms of Eye Allergies

The most common eye allergy symptoms include itching, watery eyes or excessive tearing, drainage or crusting and red eyes. You may also experience swollen eyelids, especially in the morning after you first wake.

Steps to Reduce Eye Allergy Symptoms

If you have eye allergies, getting an eye exam and a diagnosis is the first step to managing your symptoms, but there are also things you can do to reduce your exposure to airborne allergens. Our optometrist recommends keeping the windows closed on high pollen days and utilizing your air conditioner for indoor cooling and air filtration.

If you must go outside, we recommend that you wear sunglasses to help keep the allergens from reaching your eyes. If you wear contacts, you may want to consider switching to glasses on days when the pollen count is high. Contacts can trap and hold pollen and dust, which can make your symptoms worse.

Diagnosing and Treating Eye Allergies with Help from Our Optometrist

Our optometrist can examine your eyes and provide you with the right eye care to help manage your eye allergy symptoms. Common eye allergy treatments include OTC and prescription eye drops and antihistamines and decongestants.

You may also benefit from the use of sterile saline rinses, which can help remove the allergens from your eyes, and certain types of eye lubricants, which can help reduce eye irritation and redness. If your symptoms persist, our optometrist may recommend short-term steroid therapy, anti-inflammatory medications or allergy shots.
