Nearsighted Vision Treated by Our Las Vegas Optometrist

View Video

For individuals with nearsighted vision, the closer the better. This condition also referred to as myopia, is a type of refractive error that allows for sharp near vision but makes anything beyond a certain distance appear blurry and indistinct. This condition is not only annoying and limiting, but it can also prove downright hazardous to your safety. At Kopolow & Girisgen Doctors of Optometry, either Las Vegas eye doctor on our team can perform visual acuity testing to diagnose and correct your nearsightedness.

Causes and Symptoms of Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness is most often caused by an abnormality in the shape of the eye. If the eyeball is elongated instead of spherical, the incoming light comes into focus in front of the retina instead of right on it. Nearsightedness occurs in up to 30 percent of Americans and may have an inherited component, but there's also evidence that people who spend lots of time gazing at the up-close text, computer screens or objects may be more prone to it.

Symptoms of nearsightedness include blurred distance vision, a need to sit unusually close to the object of your attention, eye strain, headaches, and constant squinting, blinking or eye rubbing. It's worth nothing, however, that the symptoms of nearsightedness may also be caused by diabetes, cataracts, temporary eye muscle fatigue and other condition, making proper diagnosis crucial for correct treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options from Your Las Vegas Eye Doctor

Your Las Vegas eye doctor at Kopolow & Girisgen Doctors of Optometry can ascertain whether you suffer from nearsighted vision or some other underlying eye issue. Diagnostic techniques such as retinoscopy can show us how your eye is refracting incoming light, while the traditional eye chart reveals which distance levels you're having trouble seeing clearly. If your nearsighted test reveals a problem, your optometrist in Las Vegas will swap out different lens combinations until your vision is as sharp as possible. This is your corrective prescription.

Correction of nearsightedness can take any of several forms. Eyeglasses are the simplest option, but if you may want contact lenses instead of (or in addition) to eyeglasses, we can administer a contact lens exam to help ensure that you get the best kind of contacts for your needs. One type of contact lens technology called Ortho-K actually reshapes your corneas as you sleep for clear waking vision; these lenses may even slow the development of nearsightedness in schoolchildren. If you want permanent correction, we can co-manage LASIK refractive surgery for you.
